Equity Hawks 71-57 UCU Lady Canons
Uganda’s sole representative at the ongoing FIBA Africa Zone Five Basketball, UCU Lady Canons, got off to a poor start in Dar es salaam.
The team who is without head coach Nicholas Natuhereza lost 57-71 to Kenya side Equity Bank Hawks in their opening game at the regional meet.
It should be noted that Equity also defeated UCU 74-66 in last year’s edition in Lugogo.
Coached by Sam Lukaire and Ema Kiguyi, the side had a strong start as they led the first quarter 18-13 but they couldn’t hold on in the subsequent quarters.
The Canons conceded 20 points, as they were limited to 10 points to squander their lead – 28-33 – at halftime.
Equity added 23 and 15 more points in the third and last quarter respectively to seal their deserved victory.
On a quiet day, UCU registered 20 turnovers and made only three shots from 21 attempts outside the three point arc.
Equity’s Betty Kananu scored a game high 21 points, Seline Okumu added 17 points as the side made their intent to return at the continent, very clear.
Zainah Lokwameri contributed 17 points, Sarah Ageno added 11 points and Vilma Achieng managed 12 rebounds for the Mukono based university side.
UCU Lady Canons will return to action on Wednesday against Ethiopia’s Wolkite.
The tourney tipped off on Sunday with Tanzania’s JKT walloping Wolkite 96-36. KPA will face JKT on the day too.
On Monday, Yvone Akinyi led with 14 points to lift defending Champions KPA (Kenya) past Rwanda’s APR.
It should be noted that the top two teams in the women’s category earn their tickets to the FIBA Africa Club Championship.
