Zhu Mingzhen William, a Ugandan-Chinese basketball player has become the first mixed-race basketball player ever to be summoned on the Chinese National Basketball Team.
Born in 1996, the 23-year old Beijing-bred and scholar at Pecking University, is among the 24-man squad which was summoned by coach Du Feng on Wednesday ahead of preparations for the FIBA Olympic Basketball Qualifying Tournaments in 2021.
Zhu Mingzhen William, the second draft pick by the Guangzhou Loong Lions this year, was born to a Ugandan father and a Chinese mother whose profession is teaching.
He graduated from Beijing No.4 Middle School and Peking University, both prestigious schools in Beijing.
Zhu Mingzhen who plays as a guard for the University, becomes the first basketball player with duo citizenship to feature on the Chinese National basketball team and now serves as a new bond connecting Uganda and China.
The provisional squad will also engage in preps for the FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers in 2021 and as well develop a talent pool for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 and the Olympic Games in 2024.
The team will assemble together for the training camp between 1st and 20th September, 2020 for thorough preparations before featuring in the qualifying games next year.
