World One Health Day: Strengthening the One Health Concept at National, Sub-National Levels

Uganda has today, November 3, 2020, joined the rest of the world to commemorate the World One Health Day, the collaborative efforts of multiple disciplines working locally, nationally, and globally, to attain optimal health for people, animals and the environment.

In Uganda, the One Health concept seeks to provide an interface for One Health sector actors such as Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water and Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries as well as Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antique through the Uganda Wildlife Authority and other stakeholders to dialogue and exchange views, knowledge and experiences on issues related to implementation of One Health in the country.

This year’s commemoration is under the theme ‘Strengthening National One Health Practice: A call for Advocacy and Action’. Celebrations in Uganda were held at Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

Collins Oloya, the Director Environment Affairs at the Ministry of Water and Environment who is also the National One Health Platform (NOHP) Chairperson revealed to the media that the One Health day 2020 will increase awareness about the need  for government to purse a ‘One Health approach’ in addressing and securing the health of the population.

“It will focus on fostering partnerships and collaboration for effective and sustained One Health practice and strengthening One Health at national and sub national levels,” Oloya said.

He also noted that the one health day is intrinsically linked to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially goals 3 (Good health and well being), 6(Clean water and sanitation), 13(Climate action) and 15(Life on land).

It also resonates with the aim to achieve the national economic goals such as reaching middle income status by 2020 and the Uganda’s National Development Plan III which focuses on improving population health, safety and Management.
