World Cup: Drama As Spain, Portugal Survive Late Scare

There was drama in both Group B games highlighted by late goals, VAR calls plus a missed Penalty by Christiano Ronaldo as Spain and Portugal survived late scare to storm the round of 16.

Both games ended in stalemate – The results at least the Iberian neighbours needed coming into the game.

However, it wasn’t a walk in the park.

Needing a win to go through, Iran went down with Ricardo Quaresma sublime goal in the 45th minute and Ronaldo later missed from the spot.

Karim Ansarifad levelled in stoppage time following a VAR review but the European champions held on for their dear lives.


There was also controversies in an incident where Christiano Ronaldo received a booking after a VAR review, a decision Iran players felt was so lenient.

In the other tie, Spain needed a late goal from Iago Aspas to draw two all with an already eliminated Morocco.

The African side went into the lead following a mix-up between Andres Iniesta and Sergio Ramos for Khalid Boutaib to score inside the first 15 minutes of the game.

Isco levelled matters as the Real Madrid star finished beautiful run of play from Iniesta and Diego Costa.

Substitute Youssef En-Nesyri scored what seemed as a winner for Morocco with a classic powerful header but Spain, through Iago Aspas scored very late, an equaliser that the referee first cancelled for offside before a VAR review.

Spain go through on top with on goals scored, followed by Portugal.

Spain will face off with hosts Russia as Ronaldo’s Portugal booked a date with Suarez’s Uruguay in the round of 16.
