After competing in the Doha Diamond League, Winnie Nanyondo now turns to Nairobi World Athletics Continental Tour where she has been invited to compete in the 1500m race scheduled for Saturday 3rd October.
Uganda’s Oscar Chelimo who was earlier entered for the 5000m event has meanwhile opted out on account of unfitness.
The number of Ugandan runners for the continental competition however, remains six invitees despite Nanyondo’s inclusion.
Nanyondo last week featured in the Doha Diamond League finishing 5th overall in the 800m race.
The organizers of the Continental Tour Series have the invitational discretion basing on athletes performance in the season to select participants for the competition.
Team Uganda now comprises of Men – Abel Sikowo (3000mSC), Samuel Kibet (5000m) and Women – Leni Shida(200m/400m), Peruth Chemutai (3000mSC), Sarah Chelangat (5000m), and Winnie Nanyondo (1500m).
Apart from the World Tour offering a platform for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Ugandan athletes will also contest for the total prize money purse of 200,000 US Dollars offered to the top performers.
It’s also an opportunity for Ugandan athletes to increase the number of high quality competitive opportunities available for the country’s best athletes and also earn world rankings.
World Athletics (WA) last November launched a series of the world’s best one-day meetings outside the Diamond League organized across Asia, North America, Africa, Europe with Nairobi hosting the final serie.
The World Athletics Continental Tour is a series of meetings divided into Gold, Silver, and Bronze classifications, with the quality of competition and prize money on offer dictating such classification.
