Victoria Abigail Atukunda, the Independent Candidate for the Rukiga Woman Member of Parliament has withdrawn from the race.
The development follows a meeting with President Yoweri Museveni and NRM party elders from Kigezi sub region that took place on Tuesday at the Kabale State Lodge.
Atukunda said she decided to withdraw from the race after listening to the advice of the party elders.
“It is not true that I was coerced to withdraw my candidature by anybody,” she said in a phone conversation with Chimpreports. “It was all because of the party spirit.”
“In the same party spirit therefore, I appeal to all the people in Rukiga District to support and vote for NRM party flag bearers in order to strengthen our popular political party,” she added.
Atukunda lost the NRM party primary elections to Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi last month; coming second in the race of six.
She however, was dissatisfied with the election process and on 25th August, she was nominated as an independent candidate in the main race.
Her withdrawal leaves the NRM party flag bearer Caroline Kamusiime in the race with FDC’s Sheila Alituha.
