West Nile: Amuriat Barred from Addressing Rally in Moyo

Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s Presidential campaigns in Uganda’s West Nile Region on Friday kicked off on wrong foot as he was barred from holding a rally in Moyo Town Council.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) Flag bearer who two days ago was roughed up by security in Gulu was yesterday was yesterday expected in Obongi, Adjumani and Moyo districts according to the Electoral Commission’s (EC) schedule.

However, upon setting foot in Adjumani, officers from the Field Force Unit (FFU) ordered him to refrain from talking to a crowd that had gathered.

Ignoring Police’s guidance, Obongi County Legislator Hassan Kaps Fungaroo tried to set the stage for his Principal but his microphone was switched off a few seconds into his speech.

A furious Amuriat then attempted to address his supporters from the roof top of his V8 but this was met by tear gas.

Oboi then briefly complied and allowed to be escorted out of town but upon getting to the town’s center, he again disembarked arguing that his Car needed to be fixed.

This time, the Police relented and after he was done, a police pick-up truck escorted him all the way to the districts border with Obongi.

On Friday Morning, Amuriat found himself in a similar dilemma after a crowd that had gathered to welcome him at Pakele Town Council located in Adjumani was tear gassed for breaching with the Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Later, a compromise was struck between Godwin Ochaki the Adjumani District Police Commander and Oboi to hold the rally at Pakele Sub County headquarters but not without an altercation.

Asked why Police was harassing members of the Opposition, Ochaki responded that they are simply “following the presidential guidelines”.

Amuriat is today expected to traverse State Minister for Investment Evelyn Anite’s home district of Koboko, Yumbe and Maracha.
