Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe has vowed to ensure a speedy reconstruction of the university’s main building, which caught fire last night.
The Ivory Tower as it is known at the campus, caught fire and was severely damaged late in the night.
According to Police, the fire is believed to have started from the floors housing accounts and records before spreading to other parts.
The office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and human resource departments have also been affected.
Speaking about the incident, Prof Nawangwe said the Adminstration would do whatever is possible to restore this historical building back its past state.
” It is a very dark morning for Makerere University. Our iconic Main Administration Building caught fire and the destruction is unbelievable. But we are determined to restore the building to its historic state in the shortest time possible,” he said.
Police on Sunday morning managed to put off the fire after an exercise which lasted almost eight hours
The fire destroyed right hand side of the building and its believed that many documents and other historical items were destroyed.
This building which houses offices for the top administrators of the University including the Vice Chancellor was constructed in the 1930s.
