The Leader of Opposition in Parliament Hon. Betty Aol Ocan has said all Members of Parliament must share the burden of paying the Over the Top Tax (OTT) because they were responsible for passing it.
Speaking in Gulu last weekend, Aol blasted her colleagues who were pushing for parliament to pay the social media tax on their behalf.
“We are the ones that passed that tax, we must not run away from it,” she said.
The Gulu district Woman MP also implored her colleagues in parliament to stop being greedy and start working for the people who elected them.
On Tuesday, the speaker of Parliament Hon. Rebecca Kadaga rejected a proposal by the Parliament Commissioners to pay shillings 200 for Social Media Tax for each of the 458 members of Parliament.
The speaker vowed to make sure that decision is reversed when it reaches the floor of Parliament
The move has attracted nationwide condemnation with many people saying that the Members of Parliament are among the highest income earners and they should be able to pay the tax.
On May 30th, 2018, Parliament passed the Social Media Tax that requires every Citizen to pay shillings 200 daily to access Social Media like Facebook Twitter and Whatsapp.
