Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury (PSST), Mr Keith Muhakanizi has applauded the current leadership of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) for overhauling the water sector to the current state where most Ugandans have access to safe drinking water.
Mr Muhakanizi noted Wednesday, that the Corporation leadership under Eng. Dr Silver Mugisha had gone a long way in making key investments to extend water supply not just in urban centres but also rural areas.
“About six or seven years ago especially in the time of election, lots of people were crying lack of water. But today you cannot hear this anymore because the service is available,” Muhakanizi said.
The PSST was speaking in a recorded message at the NWSC “Water Baraza” event which was held to take stalk of the body’s service progress.
“I thank the new management under Mr Mugisha for scaling up investment to ensure that all people have water,” he said.
“Not so long ago, you remember in Kampala we had a lot of intermittent water supply, and a number of areas weren’t connected at all. But now almost every small town today has safe water supply.”
“This has been helpful especially during the Corona days. We just launched a report yesterday by UBOS and World Bank in which most people said they have enough safe water.”
According to NWSC, so far they have managed to raise water supply up to 84% in all urban areas in the country and 73% urban rural areas.
This is a significant jump from the 1986 where water supply countrywide was at only 15%.
