Vipers SC has prohibited its players from taking part in the upcoming FUFA Drum, if we are to go with the Club’s CEO letter recently.
The FUFA inter provinces competition (Fufa Drum) is an annual tourney that will be played from January/
February to October.
With the tourney dates coinciding with the period when the Uganda Premier League is ongoing, Vipers SC feel that provinces summoning their players for the Drum is ‘undermining’ the club’s season ambitions.
It should be noted that last year when FUFA President Eng Moses Magogo was launching this tourney, he was quoted by the FUFA website saying that ‘the objective of the tourney definitely is for searching talent across the country’, and Vipers feel that their players are finished products, hence, a chance should be given to non league players.
The letter by Vipers SC Peter Lwasa which is addressed to his counterpart at FUFA, Edgar Watson, reads in part:
“Therefore as Vipers SC we wonder which kind of talent can be identified from Vipers squad of established Cranes internationals,
National youth team players and a good number of former international players in total, contradiction of the tourney objectives if we are to quote the FUFA president.”
Lwasa adds: “The purpose of thos communication therefore is to officially bring it to your attention that Vipers SC administration resolved to bar all its registered players from taking part in this tourney as a measure to safe guard the club interests as well as fulfill the tournament intentions which the respective province technical teams seem to have overlooked.”
Analysis: Vipers have a valid point
The Venoms are in a tough quest for this season’s title and many will agree with me that they will need all their players dedicated to the team if they are to win their first league title since 2014/15.
With the team currently facing depth in their squad, any player that might get injured or fatigued on a different duty, FUFA Drum in this matter, may cost them lots.
Vipers SC are in a three man league title chase; seated in third, level on 32 points with second placed KCCA FC and just a point below leaders SC Villa.
