Village Chairman Arrested Over Mob Justice

Six people in Kabale district including an LC 1 Chairman have been arrested for allegedly leading a mob that killed a man.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesman identified the suspects as Kasigazi Karisiti, the LC 1 Chairman of Kategure Village in Kyanamira sub county, Bebwa Selevestri, Baguma Yelesiforo, Besigye Benon, Sunday Medard and Arinaitwe Moses.

It’s reported that on 13th March 2020, the deceased, Livingstone Rukarekona allegedly threw stones on Chairman Kasigazi’s house and damaged the roof after which he went into hiding.

But he resurfaced on 15th March 2020 and was seen at Alice Tumwebaze’s home in the same village, and when he realized he was going to be arrested; he started running away.

He was however, overpowered and beaten to death by a mob.

Maate condemned the mob for taking the law into their hands and warned that whoever participated will be hunted down and arrested.

He described those in detention so far as the ring leaders.

A case of murder was filed at Kabale Police Station under reference number CRB 317/2020.
