The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre is set to put up a memorial monument and a Museum in remembrance of the late celebrity Chimpanzee Zakayo.
The Oldest Chimpanzee Zakayo died last year 2018 at the age of 54.
James Musinguzi the Executive Director of UWEC says the museum is in appreciation for the role Chimpanzees play in increasing the number of tourists in the country.
“Zakayo was a great ambassador and an icon at UWEC. He brought a lot of tourists to UWEC but also to Uganda at large. That’s why its only right to recognize its Contribution to Uganda’s conservation by making a museum” Musinguzi said.
Musinguzi revealed that the tourist numbers have grown by 10 percent partly because of Zakayo.
“Zakayo’s Skeleton was preserved and it will be on display in the museum. We shall also have conservation education messages about Zakayo, Chimpanzees and other wildlife animals”.
Meanwhile, October 27th has been set aside to celebrate Zakayo’s legacy every year.
Zakayo was rescued from Semliki National Park, Bundibugyo in 1964 and later handed over to UWEC in 1976 until his death at the age of 54 years.
