UPL: Wasswa Strikes Late To Send Vipers Top

Friday, November 23
SC Vipers 2-1 Paidha Black Angels

Defender Geoffrey Wasswa was the unlikely hero as his late strike inside  added time gave Vipers maximum points.

Vipers edged Paidha Black Angels in a close 2-1 victory, in the only StarTimes Uganda Premier League game played on Friday.

Paidha Captain Crowmell Rwothomio had scored to cancel out Tito Okello’s opener.

The victory sends Vipers on top of the league table with 18 points from eight games.

Paidha remains rock bottom – The Zombo based side has only collected four points.

Depleted Venoms Wobbles Past Resilient Black Angels

Coming into the game, Vipers needed nothing but victory to restore parity. The side had drawn their last three league games.

However, Coach Martinez made all but overhaul changes to the team that faced Express FC in Wankulukuku.

Goalkeeper Bashir Sekagya made his debut in place of injured Fabien Mutombora while Taddeo Lwanga and Moses Waiswa who have been part of the national team were rested.

Dan Sserunkuma started on bench but was later brought on.

The best chance of the day fell to Tito Okello, but the striker looked blunt in front of goal. He fired wide off Abram Nduggwa’s assist before his shot later on was easily collected by goalkeeper John Kalumba.

Joseph Janjali went close to opening the score but his effort only beat the keeper before it crawled out for a goal kick.

Geoffrey Wasswa had his beautiful freekick kept out by Kalumba for a corner in the seventeenth minute as the hosts continued to dominate proceedings.

Cromwell Rwothomo at the other end, forced Keeper Bashir Sekagya into a tremendous save with a freekick in the 20th minute for their first shot on target.

Geoffrey Wasswa was at the end of Sseninde’s freekick but his effort went an inch over the bar in the 37th minute.

At the close of first half, Duncan Seninde was brought down in the area but Referee Brian Miiro, who was close to the scene, waived for play on.

In the Second half, Vipers stopped from where they had stopped: Tito fired over the bar after the visitors failed to clear from the area.

In the 58th minute, Abram Nduggwa was shoved at the back for the referee to award a penalty – Tito Okello put the hosts in the driving seat from the spot.

The lead was however short lived, Cromwell who was unmarked in the area, turned to score a volley to send the few visiting fans in wild cheers.

The hosts looked frustrated as the clock started ticking. Duncan Sseninde had all the space but decided to go for power and the effort went wide.

Mzee Dan who came on for Janjali, had a chance inside the area but his attempt off a well laid pass from Sseninde, went way over the bar.

Inside the four added minutes, when all hope is gone for the Venoms, Geoffrey Wasswa drove into the box to fire home at the near post to complete a dramatic ending.

What Next for both sides?

Vipers will face El Merriekh in their CAF Champions League qualifier away in Sudan on Tuesday, November 27.

Paidha will return to league action on Saturday, December 1 when they host Bright Stars in Arua.
