UPL: Express FC Pile More Misery On Nyamityobora

Friday, December 28

Express FC 2-1 Nyamityobora FC

Express FC picked maximum points to dent Nyamityobora FC in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League game.

Alex Komakech leveled matters for the visitors after Badru Nsubuga had given Express FC an halftime lead but Michael Birungi scored what proved to be the winner for the Red Eagles to edge the game 2-1 at Betway Muteesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

“It’s a big win for us, we needed this game,” noted Express FC Coach Kefa Kisala. “It’s always difficult to control these boys in the festive period and am happy that they managed to fight today.”

This is the club’s fifth win of the 2018-19 campaign after recent triumphs against Police FC, Tooro United, KCCA FC and Paidha Black Angels.

Badru Nsubuga scored his first goal of the season when he fired past Jomi Hillary in the 23rd minute.

The hosts missed plenty of opportunities and were made to rue their chances when Nyamityobora leveled matters in the second half.

John Levita brought down Innocent Ronald in the 74th minute and Alex Komakech sent the keeper the wrong for an equaliser.

Michael Birungi restored parity few minutes later on when he took his time before slotting home at the far corner, from Disan Galiwango’s free kick.

The victory, fifth for the club, elevates Express FC to seventh on the log with 19 points from 13 games.

Nyamityobora remains second from the bottom after suffering their tenth loss of the season.

Express FC Almost Paid for Missed Chances

Express FC needed to bounce back after a 2-0 derby loss to SC Villa in Namboole in their last recent league outing.

However, they had to do it without an injured duo of Tony Odur and Isaac Mutanga, who were replaced by Joel Male and Shafic Kakeeto respectively in the starting lineup.

The game, kicking off at 4:00 PM, started off with low pace as both sides failed to retain possession.

Nyamityobora suffered an early blow when Iga Mohammed limped off for Mavuma Shafic inside the first 15 minutes of the game.

The visitors woes were enhanced by Badru Nsubuga who put Express FC in a deserved lead in the 23rd minute.

Asaph Mwebaze’s side got an half chance to level matters but Ronald Innocent fired wide from the right flank at the half hour mark.

Four minutes later, Birungi beat off Charles Musiige to cut inside to launch a rocket that was kept out by Jomi Hillary for a corner.

In the second stanza, Coach Kefa Kisala looked to his bench – Eric Kambale and Billy Nkata came on for Mubarak Nsubuga and Joel Male.

The hosts missed plenty of chances including Badru’s misplaced tap in at close range and Birungi who was denied by a crossbar.

Kambale headed over Birungi’s cross before Nyamityobora leveled matters at the other end when Komakech scored from the spot.

Birungi restored parity in the 78th minute and his goal proved to be the winner. The former KCCA FC player, was named the Pilsner Man of the match.
