UPL: Express Break KCCA’s Unbeaten Run In Five Goal Thriller

Tuesday, December 11
Express FC 3-2 KCCA FC

Express edged KCCA with a 3-2 victory in a StarTimes Uganda Premier League game played at Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

Michael Birungi, Eric Kambale and Disan Galiwango scored a goal each as the hosts picked maximum points.

Substitutes Allan Kyambadde and Allan Okello scored for the visitors but their efforts proved not enough for Mike Mutebi’s charges.

Both sides struggled to retain possession as the game’s pace was greatly affected by a water logged pitch. However, the visitors were the second best team on the day.

URA and SC Vipers remain the only unbeaten teams in the league but KCCA maintains the top spot with with 24 points from eleven games. SC Vipers who have played two games less, are second with 21 points.

The win lifts Express FC to eighth place on the log with 16 points from 11 games. The side has lost three, won four and drawn as many.

The victory, first in Betway kits, comes as a big boost to Express whose next fixture is another derby with SC Villa on Friday in Namboole.

This was KCCA’s last game before they face off with Tanzania’s Mtibwa Sugar in the CAF confederation Cup.

The victory ends KCCA’s unbeaten run this season. Their record stretches back to last season – KCCA’s last loss was at Kitende where Vipers won on 27 May this year.

The Kasasiro boys had stretched a 15 game unbeaten run, winning 11 and drawing only four.

How The Action Unfolded

Coming into the game, Express FC had lost their last two games – four games without a win – and the club needed a positive response.

The club welcomed back their attacking duos Tony Odur and Michael Birungi from a short knock off.

Express had a bright start: the visitors’ goalkeeper Charles Lukwago brought down Odur in the area inside the first seven minutes but Referee Mashood Ssali waived play on.

The hosts kept on piling pressure on the visitors with Eric Kambale missing a tap in from Disan Galiwango’s cross.

In the 17th minute, Birungi slotted home from Galiwango’s assist to send the home fans into wild celebrations.

In the 27th minute, KCCA had their first attempt on goal when Muzamir Mutyaba fired from close range but custodian Ronald Mutebi equalled to the effort.

Both teams were forced into early changes: KCCA’s Saddam Juma was stretchered off for Allan Kyambadde while Express FC’s injured goalkeeper Ronald Mutebi came off for Tony Kyamera.

Birungi almost doubled the lead when he was at the end of Saddam Juma’s misplaced pass to make his way past Awany charles Lukwago, but his effort was later blocked.

At the start of the second stanza, Mutebi brought on Allan Okello for youngster Steven Sserwadda, a move that paid off.

Kyambadde levelled matters with a tap in from close range when the attacking midfielder capitalised from the hosts’ failure to clear from their own area

Express almost answered back when Tony Odur was set free on goal but his effort was poor and wide.

Kambale headed out Birungi’s free kick as Express tried to knock on the day.

Express FC regained their lead in the 71st minute from a beautiful run of play with Kambale finishing off with a turn and shot.

Express doubled their lead when KCCA’s goalkeeper Lukwago made a blunder from Galiwango’s effort from a corner for the ball to bounce inside the goal line.

Allan Okello headed in from Mustafa’s free kick to make reduce the effort but the side couldn’t complete a comeback.
