UPDF Soldier Set For Open Trial After Killing 3 Civilians In Gulu

The UPDF General Court Martial in Gulu has today Thursday conducted a public hearing and trial of L/ Cpl Geoffrey Odaga, who is accused of killing three people in Kabedopong, Bardege, Gulu on 4th August 2018.

According to Defence Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire, the court is sitting at Gulu District Council Hall for the hearing and trial where the “The general public is welcome to attend.”

On Saturday night, Odaga reportedly shot dead three civilians who were drinking at a local bar. Another reveler sustained injuries in the shooting.

The UPDF 4 Division Commander Brig Emanuel Kanyesigye caused the arrest of the soldier for misusing his weapon in an unlawful shooting.

Karemire described the shooting as “regrettable.”

It remains unclear whether the soldier was drunk or provoked by revelers.

“We cannot speculate on that,” said Karemire, adding, “Investigators should be able to tell us but even when provoked, that is not how to respond unless in self defence from equally armed people.”

Under the influence of alcohol, soldiers have previously shot revelers in bars.
