A UPDF soldier and his brother have been arrested on accusations of killing their mother and burning up her body.
Pte Saul Kyarimpa, who is attached to UPDF Second Division in Mbarara, and his young brother Mr Innocent Guma, are said to have plotted and killed Loy Barimpa, 60, a resident of the newly created Rwampara District at the weekend.
The District Police Commander, Mr Patrick Opio, said they visited the scene of crime in Bungyereza Cell, Nyeihanga Town Council, and found blood clots and bones in the house but with no body.
Mr Opio said Pte Kyarimpa first reported to police that his younger brother had committed the crime.
He added that upon arrest of the two brothers, Guma confessed that he chopped her mother into pieces and burnt her body using petrol.
“We recovered some bones from behind the house where Mr Guma alleges he burnt her body from,” Mr Opio said.
He said they are going to examine the bones to establish whether they are of the murdered women.
The LC1 Chairperson Mr Owens Muhinda said that the two brothers have been accusing their mother of practicing witchcraft.
“I heard they were claiming that she bewitched their brother (her son) and he died in a motor accident in Qatar; I also heard they were claiming that they have been alerted by a witch doctor that their mother was planning to kill them too,” Mr Muhinda said.
Police rushed to the scene of crime in Bungyereza Cell. They found the door of the house where Barimpa was staying locked from outside. On breaking in, the police saw pool of blood clotting on floor and blood splashes on the walls. The woman had apparently been killed the previous night.
“There was thick blood on the carpeted floor of the room where she was staying. The body was not there, we wondered what could have gone wrong,” Mr Opio said.
