UPDF Receives Brand New Respirators to Boost Covid-19 Response

The Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) yesterday received two brand new portable respirators also known as ventilators from an Italian company to be used in the treatment and management of Covid-19.

The two machines were donated by Leornado Company through the Italian Embassy in Uganda and were received by the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. David Muhoozi at the Defence headquarters in Mbuya, Kampala.

Respirators are medical devices used to provide patients with oxygen when they are unable to breathe on their own, a common symptom of the prevailing Covid-19.

According to the UPDF officials, the respirators will be utilized at Bombo Military Hospital and State House Military Hospital.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief of Defence Forces Gen. David Muhoozi thanked the Italian ambassador H.E Massimiliano Mazzarati for having chosen to support UPDF in the fight against COVID-19, “with the respirators that are one of a kind in Uganda.”

He equally thanked Leornado Company for maintaining their longstanding relationship with UPDF.

In his remarks, the Italian Ambassador Massimiliano Mazzarati recognized the selfless service the UPDF soldiers have offered within Uganda and the peacekeeping efforts within the region, especially the AMISOM.

“We thought of something more concrete to cement our friendship with the UPDF and the best way to express this appreciation is in terms of donating these two respirators especially during these times of COVID-19,” Mazzarati said.
