A 28-year-old Congolese national was on Wednesday killed in a gunfire exchange with Uganda People’s Defense Forces-UPDF soldiers during a highway robbery in Kisoro district.
The deceased has been identified as Louise Nambajimana, a resident of Busanza in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He was gunned down by UPDF soldiers from Kanombe Detach at Giharo village in Muramba Sub county around 12:30am Wednesday morning.
Francis Nzabona, the LC 3 chairperson of Muramba Sub County, says Nambajimana who was armed with a Sub Machine Gun staged an illegal roadblock around 09:00PM and started robbing passersby.
According to Nzabona, the victims alerted the commandant of Kanombe army detache who immediately dispatched soldiers to the area to arrest the suspect.
Peter Mugisha, the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner, says the deceased resisted arrest and fired at the soldiers forcing one of the soldiers to respond in self-defense.
Mugisha says the army also recovered an SMG rifle and 12 rounds of ammunition from the robber.
He revealed that Uganda is in talks with DRC to have the body repatriated.
Charles Okotto, the Kisoro District Police Commander, says the deceased’s body is lying at Kisoro Hospital mortuary pending postmortem as investigations into the matter carry on.
