The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) on Friday evening joined the investigation into the murder of Arua Musicality MP Ibrahim Abiriga, who was gunned down on his way to his residence in Kawanda, Matugga, in Wakiso district.
The army just after 10pm in the night joined their sister agency, the Police who already had their Scene of Crime and Forensics officers at the scene trying to piece together the evidence.
Abiriga was shot dead in his yellow VW beetle at around 7pm according to eye witnesses, shortly after he stopped to greet children in the neighborhood
His vehicle veered slightly off the road and rammed into a jack fruit tree, perhaps because he was trying to escape the killers.
Eyewitnesses told our reporter Nixon Segawa at the scene that the MP was driving himself in the beetle when he was gunned down.
“We heard a lot of bullets, the honourable was driving himself as always,” she said.
The MP had reportedly stopped to greet children and as he left, the killers who seemed to be waiting for him, sprung out and opened fire.
The locals, described Abiriga as “a man of the people,”
“Children and people always cheer him up as he returns home, he often stopped and gave people money,” another witness said
The Democratic Party president Norbert Mao condemned the killing of Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga.
Mao described the incident as a “shock” before praising the deceased as “straightforward”.
. “I have learnt with shock of the murder of Arua Municipality MP Ibrahim Abiriga. I convey my sincere condolences to his family, the parliament of Uganda and the entire country,” said Mao.
“Here is a man who spoke straight and what you saw was what you got. I condemn this murder.”
