UPDF Spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire has dismissed reports that a soldier attached to 407 Brigade in Mourita Sub-county, in Nakapiripirit District impregnated 14-year-old girl.
“The Daily Monitor Newspaper of July 28, 2017 carried a story on page 2 with a heading ‘14 Year old accuses UPDF soldier of Impregnating her’ by one reporter Joseph Kato,” Karemire opens up in a statement.
“UPDF would like to clarify that no such allegations have ever been labelled against any of our soldiers operating under 407 Brigade based in Mouruita sub county in Nakapiripirit district.”
According to the story published in the said publication, “the minor, who would be clocking 15 years on August 20, claims she was defiled and impregnated by the suspect who later abandoned her in a rented house.”
The reporter further writes that the victim, while narrating her ordeal, said: “When I visited him in the barracks, he asked me to enter his manyata [hut]. He asked me to sit near him that he wanted to tell me a good story. He dragged me to his bed and used me.”
Basing on that, Karemire stipulated that “our troops have stayed in this locality for a long time and have established a permanent headquarter since the time of disarmament. UPDF enjoys a cordial relationship with the people of Nakapiripit who have played a big role to ending illegal weapons in Karamoja.”
The UPDF mouthpiece adds: “UPDF strongly refutes these allegations meant to tarnish our hard earned good image and withes to refer the reporter to corroborate his findings with Nakapiripirit Police where a defilement case Ref No 06/16/07/2017 against one civilian Lokaul Zakaraia a resident of Moruita was registered and the culprit currently under remand in Nakapiripirit government prison.”
He also noted that “UPDF deserves an apology from the monitor publications on the same page on which the reporter made such allegations that call for international condemnations and put in bad light the institution of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces.”
