Update: Female Pilot Maj Naome Karungi Dies In UPDF Chopper Crash

It has been confirmed that the Uganda People’s Air Defence chopper that crashed Tuesday afternoon has killed Maj. Naome Karungi.

Major Karungi is the one who was flying the ill fated aircraft and has been the only female pilot flying Ranger choppers in the force.

Ranger choppers are small aircrafts used in search and rescue missions.

Reports indicate that the deceased pilot has been flying the type of aircraft for 14 years since 2005.

By the time of her death, it was reported that they were on a training mission with a yet to be identified crew member at the rank of cadet.

The tragedy was confirmed by the force spokesperson Brig. Richard Karemire in a statement.

“We regret to inform that a UPDAF Jet  Ranger AF 302 on a training mission has crashed in Gomba. It had two crew members.Sadly,no one is reported to have survived,” Karemire said

Preliminary reports indicate that the aircraft may have been failed by bad weather.


Investigation into the cause has commenced.

“We offer our condolences to the family members and entire UPDF fraternity,”
