UPC Turns to Social Media for Transparency in Primaries

The Uganda People’s Congress party (UPC) has announced that in a bid to keep the public in the loop, it will be using Facebook to broadcast its 2021 Parliamentary internal party primaries.

Hajji Muhamood Gabwera Kazimbiraine, the Chairperson of the Party Electoral Commission told journalists at the party headquarters in Kampala, that this is being done to ensure transparency and to avoid after-polls complaints.

“We shall be the first party in Uganda to do that. Results from the Sub Counties shall be posted on Facebook there and then,” he noted

The elections he said he will be conducted by way of secret ballot.

“We want to ensure that the polls are concluded in peace and nominate our candidates in the forthcoming national elections,” he said

According to Kazimbiraine, the polls shall be held in only ten districts since the rest of the districts and Constituencies have candidates who ended into a consensus.

“I congratulate those who were handed the flags unopposed and urge them to work hard to make sure that they emerge victorious in those Constituencies,” he noted.

The elections as such will be held in ten districts of; Alebtong, Apach, Lira, Lira City and Oyam.

Other districts are; Dokolo, Otuke, Oyam, Amorata and Kwania.

He said that over 200 candidates expressed interests of holding the party flag, but only 30 will go into the polls since the rest are unopposed.

The primaries will be held on September 26, at different Sub Counties in these ten districts.

“The polls shall start at 9:00am and end at 2:00pm with observance of COVID-19 guidelines,” he said.
