UPC Quashes Reports of Its Members Allegedly Defecting to NUP

Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has distanced itself from reports that a section of its members allegedly defected to the National Unity Platform party (NUP) this week.

On Tuesday August 18, a group of over 30 members led by a one Charles Okello, claiming to be members of UPC from Tororo sub region, joined NUP at its headquarters in Kamwokya.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Kampala, Sharon Oyat Arach, the UPC party spokesperson said, “We don’t have any member who joined NUP and we have not had anybody planning to detect.”

“As UPC, we are carrying out an investigation on this matter but what we know is that our members are extremely loyal, because they even come here for consultations on a daily basis,” she added.

Faizo Muzeyi, the head of Media and Communication at UPC went an extra mile to accuse NUP for trying to “steal our slogan of ‘everywhere, and for all of us’.”

“I advise them to remain with their slogan of ‘people power our power’ but the one they use at NUP that ‘NUP everywhere’ is a slogan that was developed by UPC,” he noted.

Recently UPC and NUP underwent a cold war on the ownership of the Red colour as per party representation is concerned.

Meanwhile, Arach disclosed that the party successfully scooped different positions in the recently concluded Persons with Disabilities, Older Persons and the Village Committee elections in all the places they fielded candidates.

“As we wait for the final declaration of the Special Interest Groups elections results by the Electoral Commission, provisional results have indicated that UPC is doing well,” she noted.

“The party encourages its successful candidates in the concluded village SIGs elections to prepare and participate in the next Parish level that is starting with nomination of Committee representatives from August 20-25 followed by campaigns from August 26-27 and elections on August 28 and September 2,” she added.

Congratulating the successful candidates in their LC3 Chairpersons and Sub County Councilors party primaries, Arach called on those who were defeated to rally behind the successful Candidates.

“We now encourage them to work as a team in order to achieve our sole goal of sweeping most of the elective positions, where the party will field candidates,” she said.
