UPC Discourages Independent Candidates as Party Primaries Take Shape

The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has discouraged its members against re-contesting as independent candidates in the 2021 general elections, in case they don’t go through during the forthcoming party primaries.

Addressing journalists at the party headquarters in Kampala on Wednesday August 12, Sharon Oyat Arach the party spokesperson said that candidates should know that the party has been built on the spirit of togetherness and brotherhood.

“As social Democratic party, we want to assure candidates that the party primaries are going to be free and fair at all various elective positions and as such, we call upon whoever does not go through primaries to rally behind, support and campaign for the successful members,” she said.

According to Arach, this will help UPC in winning most of the positions in the general elections, since the candidates (both successful) and unsuccessful will have merged their support on ground.

She noted that the Party Electoral Commission (PEC) Team led by its Chairperson, Hajji Mahmoud Kazimbiraine is on ground to organize and hold the party primary elections.

Arach emphasized that UPC will start by organizing elections for flag bearers in two major positions; LC3 Chairpersons and Sub-County Councilors and this will take place on Friday August 14.

“The primaries will only be held in areas where there are more than one aspirant who picked the nomination forms and the successful candidates who qualify in the party primaries will be nominated between September 7 and 17 as flag bearers to represent UPC in the forthcoming general elections,” Arach added.

According to Arach, over 1000 candidates picked nomination forms for the LC3 Chairperson positions and over 8000 applied for Parish Councilors.
