The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) handed over equipment to the Aliguma Foundation that will help in upgrading the Acholi Quarters playground.
The soggy Acholi Quarters playground is located in Nakawa Division, Kampala and was spotted by the UNHCR representative in Uganda Joel Boutroue during the 2019 Slum Soccer tournament.
The donated equipment included hoes, slashers, sickles, spades and axes and chevrolet branded balls, each 50 in number.
The “scientific” hand over ceremony took place on Monday at the UNHCR offices in Kololo and was graced by the UNHCR representative in Uganda Joel Boutroue and the Foundation Executive Director, Ritah Aliguma.
“I was really impressed with the commitment from the Aliguma Foundation during the slum soccer tournament finals at the Acholi quarters. So we had to do something in our capacity and support the foundation and this equipment is to help upgrading the Acholi quarters playground,” Boutroue remarked during the handover.
While speaking to the media, the foundation executive director Ritah Aliguma lauded the UNHCR and vowed to put the tools into use.
“We are very grateful for the support from the UNHCR and the tools given to us will help us to upgrade our pitch at a better level than it is today. Our pitch has been soggy and non playable but we are very excited about this support from UNHCR and we shall put the equipment to better use,” Aliguma said.
Luigi Slum won the 2019 edition after edging Kawenja Slum 5-4 in penalties following a two all draw after the normal time in Banda.
