Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has cleared 13 more companies to start production of non-medical face masks.
The total number of certified companies in the country has now risen from six to twenty-three.
In a statement released on Wednesday, UNBS revealed that they cleared these companies after confirming that they fulfilled all the required standards.
“More companies are still undergoing certification process thus the number of companies manufacturing non-medical masks is expected to increase.”
The masks produced are of two layers with 65% Polyester and 35% Cotton.
Some of the cleared companies include Lida Packaging products limited, Southern Range Nyanza limited, Evergreen safaris limited, Jude Color Solutions, Winfred Fashion designers Limited, Fine Spinners, Graphic systems limited , Beier safety and security Ltd, Unique uniform manufacturer ltd and Sigma knitting industries limited.
Others are MMacks investment limited, Fundi building construction limited, Ex Ken Uganda limited, The Key Murungi fashion limited, Najjeru packaging industries limited, Youth Save the nature Uganda limited, Christex Garment limited, Jayne Collection and events, Prince Orient Uganda Limited, Tenge Collection Ltd, Big concept enterprise, Sillk events and SCD Uganda Ltd.
Due to COVID19 pandemic, Government issued an order that all Ugandans aged six years and above should put on face masks wherever in public.
It was recommended that they should use the approved cotton masks which are reusable.
This week Government kicked off with boarder districts in giving out free face masks as directed by the president.
