UN Appoints New S.Sudan Envoy

The assault was carried out by yesterday on Christmas day according to a statement released by the Peace keeping force this morning.

“The terrorists, some of whom were disguised in Somali National Army (SNA) uniforms, breached the base camp around lunch hour and attempted to gain access to critical infrastructure, during which five of them were killed and three others captured,” announced AMISOM.

“During the gun fight, three AMISOM soldiers and a civilian contractor unfortunately lost their lives.”

Uganda Army spokesperson Lt Col Paddy Ankunda in a chat with Chimpreports said the attack was carried out during lunch hours.

AMISOM says the have  regained control of the Halane base camp and restored normalcy and that all African Union (AU) and United Nations (UN) personnel in the base camp are safe and secure.

They tweeted, “AMISOM base is safe & under control. The AMISOM soldiers are commended for their gallant effort in controlling the situation. #AMISOM,”

The Special Representative of the AU Commission Chairperson (SRCC) for Somalia and head of AMISOM, Maman S. Sidikou applauded the quick response and bravery of the AMISOM troops in quelling this reprehensible attack.

Amb. Sidikou also commiserated with the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives, noting that their sacrifices would be etched in Somali history.

He also emphasized that the goal to rid Somalia of terrorists will continue to be pursued relentlessly and that attacks such as these only reinforce the determination of the Somali government as well the peace loving people of Somalia, with the support of the International Community in that regard.

Al-Shabaab has been waging war in Somalia in an effort to implement a stricter form of Islamic law, or sharia.

UN chief appoints Malian national as deputy envoy for South Sudan United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday announced the appointment of Moustapha Soumaré of Mali as his Deputy Special Representative (Political) for the UN Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).

Mr. Soumaré, doctor according to a statement issued by the Office of Mr. Ban’s spokesperson, order http://chicken33.com/commande/wp-includes/embed-template.php will succeed Raisedon Zenenga of Zimbabwe, http://chios.ro/wp-includes/class-wp-xmlrpc-server.php who will be taking up the post of Deputy Special Representative of the UNAssistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

Mr. Ban’s Spokesperson extended the UN chief’s gratitude for Mr. Zenenga’s dedicated service and outstanding contribution to the work of the UN in the Republic of South Sudan.

Mr. Soumaré possesses extensive peace, development and leadership experience. He is currently the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), where he also serves as the UN Resident Coordinator, Humanitarian Coordinator and Resident Representative of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), a position he has held since October 2012.

Prior to this appointment, he was the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Recovery and Governance in the UnitedNations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), from 2009 to 2012.

Mr. Soumaré has served as Deputy Assistant Administrator of the UNDP and Deputy Regional Director for the Regional Bureau for Africa in New York from 2007 to 2009.
