The total number of people who have succumbed to COVID-19 in Uganda has on Monday risen to 5.
This was announced by Dr Henry Mwebesa, the Director-General Health Services in the Ministry of Health.
“The Ministry of Health would like to inform the public that Uganda has registered one COVID-19 death today. This brings the total number of deaths to 5,” he announced.
The deceased is a 46 year old female of Indian origin and resident of Kibuli in Kampala.
Dr. Mwebesa said that on August 1, 2020, the patient was presented at Kibuli Muslim Hospital with signs and symptoms consistent with COVID-19.
Kibuli Hospital referred her to Mulago National Specialized Hospital for further management on the same day.
“Unfortunately, she passed away on her way to Mulago Hospital,” Mwebesa said.
Dr. Mwebesa added that further information revealed that the deceased was diabetic and off medication and had a history of asthma for 10 years.
Samples were taken off from her body and sent to laboratories for analysis.
“The samples were analyzed at 3 different laboratories; Makerere University, Uganda Virus Research Institute and Central Public Health Laboratories and confirmed SAR – COV -2,” said Dr Mwebesa.
The process of tracing her contacts, he said, is underway.
