Security operatives have arrested two residents of Kakumiro District over issues related to threatening national security.
Abdul Karim Niwamanya and Abdul Safari, all residents of Igayaza Town Council, were this past Friday picked by security operatives, bundled into the car and driven off to an unknown destination.
According to Niwamanya’s father, Mr Ali Ahimbisibwe, the security operatives were driving a black, tinted car and armed with pistols.
Mr Ahimbisibwe said they also carried a smart phone with photos of the suspects he said were suspected of causing insecurity.
He said he suspects the soldiers were from the Internal Security Organisation (ISO).
‘‘I feel hurt very much to see my son being arrested over rebel activities and yet he is not. How can my son be in rebel activities and yet Iam the one who works with security?” said Ahimbisibwe, who is also a retired UPDF officer.
He said when he went to police to ask about the whereabouts of his son, he was referred to ISO and CMI offices in Kampala, who also sent him back to the District Internal Security Officer (DISO).
The DISO, Mr Edward Byarugaba, today Tuesday refused to meet the suspects’ parents who had camped at his office, seeking answers.
The parents were later joined by other residents and friends of the suspects at the DISO’s office, who turned rowdy when Mr Byarugaba failed to address them.
He locked himself in office for about five hours until he was saved by police.
The Resident District Commissioner, Ms Mary Lule Senkungo, also denied knowledge of the arrests and said he had learnt of it from the local sub-county chairman.
She also faulted the purported security operatives for carrying out the arrests without informing the office of RDC, District police Commander and other relevant security officials in the district.
“The mistake they made is that when they came to the district, they never informed me, not even the DISO or the DPC. What I did was also to find out whether the arrested suspects are still alive and the answer is yes they are safe,’’ he said.
She also faulted the purported security operatives for carrying out such arrests without informing the office of RDC, District police Commander and other relevant security officials in the district.
