Uganda Registers 176 New Covid-19 Cases, 1 Death as New Treatment Centre at Namboole Gets Completed

The Ministry of Health has confirmed 176 new COVID-19 cases in Uganda bringing the cumulative total number of infections in the country to 3,288.

The new cases were confirmed from samples tested for COVID-19 on Wednesday.

According to the statement issued by Dr Henry Mwebesa the Director General Health Services in the Ministry of Health, of the 176 new cases, 172 are contacts and alerts and they include 70 from Manafwa district, 39 from Kampala, 17 from Kikuube, 13 from Buikwe, 10 from Mbale, 9 from Moroto, 5 from Mukono, 2 from Hoima, 2 from Tororo while Buvuma, Kyenjojo, Mbarara, Namisindwa and Wakiso registered 1 case each.

The rest 4 cases include 2 Ugandan truck drivers who arrived into Uganda via Busia and Malaba border points and 2 health workers.

4 foreign truck drivers (2 Kenyans, 1 Congolese and 1 Rwandese) also tested positive for COVID-19 and were denied entry into Uganda as per the presidential directive that only COVID-19 negative foreign truck drivers be allowed entry into the country.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry also announced 1 new COVID-19 death bringing the total of deaths to 33.

One new COVID-19 death registered today, a Ugandan male 40 years old and a resident of Wakiso district. This brings the total COVID-19 deaths to 33,” the Health Ministry announced.

A total of 5,453 COVID-19 samples were tested on Wednesday and these include 1,261 from points of entry and 4,192 from contacts and alerts.

Since Uganda began testing COVID-19, a cumulative total of 391,335 samples have been tested.

Currently, Uganda has a cumulative total of 3,288 COVID-19 confirmed cases, 1,532 recoveries and 33 fatalities.

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that a special COVID-19 treatment center at Namboole stadium is completed.

This was set up to relieve the heavy burden on hospitals treating COVID-19 such as Mulago which is getting full to capacity.
