Uganda Cranes Activate AFCON Mood with Win over Ivory Coast

Uganda Cranes summed up their preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations with a tight 1-0 win over Ivory Coast in their final build up match on Saturday.

The match that was free for the handful of Ugandan fans was played in Abu Dhabi.

Farouk Miya scored the all important goal from the penalty spot from a foul on Hassan Wasswa during a  corner kick in the later minutes of the first half.

The team’s head coach Sebastian Desabre started his captain Denis Onyango in goal with Jjuuko, vice captain Wasswa,  Walusimbi and England-based Mugabi providing cover.

Veteran Khalid Aucho dictated play in the midfield with USA-based Azira, Farouk Miya and newcomer Abdu Lumala.

Simba SC striker Okwi, KCCA’s Kaddu and Miya were leading the attack.

He later slotted in Isaac Muleme, Taddeo Lwanga and Ronald Mukiibi for Lumala, Miya and Jjuuko.

On the other side,  Ibrahim Kamara started a half-strength squad but later on introduced European-based stars in Wilfred Zaha, Coulibaly and Serey Die but their efforts failed.

Uganda is placed in group A alongside Egypt, DR Congo and Zimbabwe.
