The return legs of the quarter finals stages in the ongoing 2016 University football league kick off on Thursday with a ‘Christian’ derby between Uganda Christian University (UCU) and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi in Mukono.
UCU picked a one all draw at Nkozi from the first leg fixture and will be looking to build on that after failing at this stage in the last two seasons.
They were lucky to pick a point in Nkozi in the first leg after falling behind just in the second minute after Douglas Owori put the hosts in front with an early strike.
The Mukono based university were chanced to pull level towards the hour mark when Semanda handled the ball inside his own territory with Joshua Kigozi not making any mistake to convert the chance.
This tie is just a repeat of last season’s where the Martyrs knocked out their Thursday hosts from the same stage.
The Nkozi outfit emerged 4-1 aggregate winners courtesy of goals from Ivan Semwanga and Julius Senkali that ensured UMU picked a 2-1 victory at Mukono. The first leg had ended 2-0.
It was also the first time UMU crossed to the last four where they edged Makererere University 3-2 to reach first ever finals. They lost 4-0 to MUBS in finals.
The next semifinals clash will be staged on Friday at the Luzira stadium where Makererere host Kyambogo University in a closed door affair.
