Uganda Christian University’s Lady cardinals are the new champions of the Fufa Women Elite League.
The Cardinals were crowned champions on Sunday evening after edging out a resilient Lady Doves at the StarTimes stadium in Lugogo.
Former Kawempe Muslim FC and 2017 Female most Valuable player of the year, Hassifah Nassuna, cracked the doves’ nest with her brilliant 38th minute free kick.
Kenyan import Maureen Kinavudori sealed the win with only six minutes remaining on the clock after the Cardinals thwarted several attempts of a comeback by the Masindi debutants.
Hassifah Nassuna was crowned both the most valuable player of the league and the top scorer after netting 14 goals.
Lady Doves goalkeeper, Daisy Nakaziro, won the golden glove ahead of Crested Cranes first-choice Ruth Aturo.
Dethroned champions, Kawempe Muslim, were consoled with the fair play award for receiving only four yellow cards the entire season.
The champions walked back home with Shs. 12 million on top of the trophy, Lady Doves settled for seven.
The winner between Kawempe Muslim and Kampala Queens in the third-place playoff will receive five million while the fourth-placed will earn two.
UCU’s victory ends Kawempe Muslim’s four year dominance in the league.
