The United States of America has recalled its Ambassador to South Sudan, Thomas Hushek over failure by conflicting parties in the restive nation to form transitional unity government.
The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo on Monday evening said Washington’s top most representative in Juba is being recalled for consultations to “re-evaluate” relationship with South
A subsequent statement released by Department of State Spokesman, Morgan Ortagus, in no uncertain terms, declared that the withdrawal is over the failure by President Salva Kiir and armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar to form transitional government of national unity.
“The Department of State has called back U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan Thomas Hushek for consultations related to the recent failure of parties to form the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity by the extended deadline of November 12,” said the statement.
Kiir and Machar, during a meeting convened in Uganda by President Yoweri Museveni on November 7th 2019, postponed the formation of transitional unity government by 100 days from the earlier deadline of November 12th 2019.
In the peace agreement signed in September 2018 to end the bloody civil war that broke out in December 2013, parties agreed to form unity government in six months. It has however been postponed twice.
In the latest move, senior President Trump administration officials are expected to brainstorm with Ambassador Hushek to device the next course of action.
“While in Washington, Ambassador Hushek will meet with senior U.S. government officials as part of the re-evaluation of the U.S. relationship with the Government of South Sudan given the latest developments,” added the statement.
US has already imposed sanctions on six military and rebel commanders accused of prolonging the war that has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced over 3 million people internally and to neighboring countries.
Pompeo now says Washington will instead deal with the region to achieve peace and political transition in South Sudan.
“The United States stands with the people of South Sudan in their pursuit of peace and will work in partnership with the region to support efforts to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan.”
