Police in Kisoro District have in custody two teenagers who it says are the main suspects in the murder of a local resident, Jack Sserwume.
The deceased, whose headless body was found in bushes by locals on Wednesday morning, was a resident of Nteko village, in Nyabwishenya sub county.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesman identified the suspects Fred Hashikimana,17, and David Ndayisaba, 18.
Maate says the two have been cooperating with police and even led officers to where they dumped the head of the deceased.
The teenagers were picked up after it was established that one of them was the actual owner of the phone that was recovered at the murder scene.
Police had earlier wrongly allocated the phone to another person, one John Ssabagyenzi, who was briefly detained. It turned out however that he had sold the phone to one of the youths now in custody.
The murder investigation yesterday took a strange twist when Police accused the area member of parliament, Hon John Kamara, of raiding a police cell with soldiers and breaking out Ssabagyenzi. The latter has worked as the MP’s election campaign manager.
The Police mouthpiece says they have since removed the allegations levelled against Hon John Kamara and Ssabagyenyi, after identifying the real suspects. He noted however that the MP’s act of raining a police post was inappropriate.
“When the MP cooperated and handed over Ssabagyenzi John who was an earlier suspect, who told us whom he had sold the phone to, we removed the allegations levelled against them, but we still think he acted in bad faith” Maate said.
Maate revealed that the teenagers led police to a cassava garden where they had dumped the head of Sserwume. The motive of the murder remains unknown so far.
