Police on Monday arrested two of their own in Kabarole district for not wearing face masks in public as per the presidential guidelines on containing the spread of COVID-19.
The police officers were arrested on the orders of the Resident District Commissioner, Mr Steven Asiimwe, during an operation in Mpanga market in Fort Portal town. The duo is now detained at Fort Portal police central station
Mr Asiimwe, who is also the chairman of district Covid-19 task force, said it’s unfortunate that the people who are supposed to enforce the presidential directives are the ones defying them
He urged public to always inform him whenever they meet any member of security forces without wearing masks in public.
President Museveni on Monday during televised address to the nation on the update of Covid-19, said the government will start giving out free face masks to the public starting on June 10 and said it’s compulsory for people to wear masks in public.
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has authorized six companies to produce non-medical facemasks for over 30 million Ugandans aged six and above. Ms Sylvia Kirabo, the UNBS principal public relations officer identified the six companies as Linda Packaging Products ltd, South Range Nyanza ltd, Evergreen Safaries Ltd, Jude Color Solutions Ltd, Winfred Fashion Designs Ltd and Fine Spinners Ltd.
