Uganda U17 national team, the Cubs retuned home on Monday morning after their heroics that saw them emerge Champions at the CECAFA U17 Africa Cup of Nations regional qualifiers.
The Cubs defeated Ethiopia 3-1 in the final played at National stadium in Tanzania a result that meant they qualified to the 2019 U17 Africa Cup of Nations.
The team touched base at Entebbe International Airport on Monday morning and was welcomed by a delegation from the local football governing body, FUFA headed by Hon. Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi the State Minister For Children and Youth Affairs and also the 3rd FUFA Vice President.
Upon arrival, FUFA President Moses Magogo who travelled with the team back home stated that it is their target as the Federation to develop football from the grassroot.
“We are proud as FUFA and as a country for the success the boys achieved. It is the first time that a junior team from Uganda will play at such a stage. This is our dream because we believe if these players follow organic growth, the future is bright.” He said.
Magogo also added that, qualifying for such tournaments exposes our players to better markets.
“Most clubs in Europe now go for players at such age and you can only be scouted when you play in such competitions. We believe it’s an opportunity for us to get to better markets or clubs for our players. ” Added Magogo.
Peter Onen, the head coach of the team lauded the players for the commitment and credited FUFA for good preparations.
“I want to thank the players for the commitment showed throughout the tournament. I believe the good preparations we had, having a training camp in Njeru helped us to become one unit and I thank FUFA for that.” He said.
Team captain, Gavin Kizito Mugweri also heaped praise on his teammates and stated this is just the beginning.
“I thank my fellow players and I want to promise this is just the beginning. We shall go to the final tournament as competitors not participants.”
Uganda will represent CECAFA region in the final tournament that will have teams across Africa to be hosted by Tanzania next year.
The team was treated to a luncheon at Jevine Hotel in Kampala before the players returned to their respective homes.
