Shock on Friday gripped Laroo Division in Gulu Municipality when a man got trapped in a trench he was excavating which caved in and buried him, killing him instantly.
Vincent Leku, 27, was excavating soil from a trench to pave way for industrial water pipe system when a heap of soil buried him and his colleague Felix Aliyo. However, Aliyo survived with injuries.
Both Leku and Aliyo were hired by Welhai International Economic and Technical Cooperative Company Ltd (WIETC), a Chinese construction company contracted to undertake the multi-billion shillings by Gulu water and sanitation project.
By the time Police Fire and Rescue unit came to his rescue, he was already dead.
Witness said residents were able to dig Aliyo out before he was rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital where he is receiving treatment for his injuries.
Jimmy Patrick Okema, Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the incident, adding that the body is at Gulu hospital.
He warned those involved in excavation work to take precaution since soil can collapse anytime during this rainy season.
Buildings have over the years buried many people in Uganda. In May, 5 people were trapped in rubble following the collapse of a building under construction in Munyonyo, a plush Kampala suburb.
According to police and eye witnesses, poor workmanship was to blame for the building’s collapse.
