Traffic Officer Shot Dead In Ambush By Karimojong Warriors

Security agencies are hunting for armed Karimojong warriors who shot dead a traffic police officer in an ambush in Nakapiripirit District on Sunday evening.

Fahad Talyaura and his expectant wife, Jackline Nandigobye, fell in the ambush on their motorcyle on their way to Moroto regional referral hospital.

According to Moroto regional police commander Gerald Twishime, the officer was first injured and continued riding the bike.

“Talyaura was shot at close range and the bullet penetrated through the thigh and abdomen. However, the injured Talyaura continued riding the motorcycle up to Lokali Bridge where he became weak before making phone calls. We rushed to the scene and found both of them bleeding. Talyaura died on the way to Matany hospital after failing to get a scanning machine in Moroto hospital,” he said.

Nandigobye sustained injuries in the leg and is admitted to Matany hospital.

Twishime added that the ambush occurred near Nabwin Agricultural Research Institute.

Attacks by the warriors are on the rise in the area. In May, Dr Benson Otim, who works at Moroto Regional Referral Hospital, was shot  dead in an ambush mounted by the Karimojong cattle rustlers in Turutuko,  Lopei Sub County in Napak district.

On the 4th of May 2020 Karimojong cattle rustlers killed one Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier and drive away unspecified number of cattle in Kaabong district.
