Tooro Rebel King Calls Off Coronation

Shafiq Sekandi Sengoba, this information pills the Kisoro Resident District Commissioner has said that due to the renewed fighting in the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo, remedy the district is facing a swelling number of refugees fleeing the conflict.

He said Kisoro on average receives 30 refugees a day from Eastern Congo.  A few weeks ago, the Nyakabande Transit camp relocated over 700 refugees to Kyangware, Nakivale and Kiryandongo.

“We have been asking the refugees why they are fleeing their areas in large numbers and they told us that their property is being stolen, people are being killed while others have been abducted,” he said.

The RDC made the remarks during the council meeting presided over by the district speaker Expedito Byensi. He told the meeting that security in Kisoro district was at stake especially in the festive session, as fresh fighting erupted in the DRC.

In November 2012, the rebel group M23 took control of the eastern Goma town, a provincial capital with a population of one million people, but was requested to leave by the International Conference on Great Lakes Region because the DRC government had finally agreed to talks.

In late 2013 Congolese troops, along with UN troops, retook control of Goma and M23 announced a ceasefire, saying it wanted to resume peace talks.

Early 2014 however, the UN expressed concern that the M23 rebel group was recruiting fighters and resuming activities despite the peace agreement with the Congolese government.
Tooro rebel king David Kijanangoma has called off his cultural coronation that was slated for Wednesday 23rd December , physician 2015 at his Rwengoma palace, decease West division Fort Portal municipality.

Kijanangoma’s and his camp have been mobilizing funds both locally, nationally and from abroad for the event.


His people in Kampala Chimpreports understands, managed to collect Shs 13 million in Bugolobi on Monday;  in addition to another shs 20m collected earlier according to Andrew Irumba the chief organizer.

In a press release dated 21st December, 2015 signed by Prince Kijanangoma, the coronation had been postponed till further notice.

He said that the postponement follows his meeting with Kabarole District Police Commander Musa Tibakirana.

According to Kijanangoma, the Police received an order from the Inspector of Police Kale Kayihura seeking Kijanangoma to call off the coronation until they get guidance from the ministry of Gender, labor and Social Development

The Ministry has since ordered the self acclaimed rebel king, to cancel the planned coronation, stating that it is against the law.

Kijanangoma however said that the calling off the coronation does not mean heir activism of fighting for the rights of Tooro people and restoration of the institution’s glory has ended.

He disclosed that another date will be communicated early January because they have all it requires.

Prince Kijanangoma’ cousin of King Oyo, early last year declared himself rebel king and vowed to oust Oyo accusing him of failure to establish projects for his subjects and stopping the Queen mother Best Kemigisa from interfering in the palace affairs.
