Tit for Tat: Tanzania Bars Kenya Airways as Skies Reopen

The rift between Kenya and Tanzania is gaining strength after Dar es Salaam nullified the approval for Kenya Airways to fly into Tanzania.

After months of lockdown, closure of international borders and flights due to COVID-19 pandemic, Kenya had set today1st August 2020 as the date to open its skies for international commercial passenger flights.

Tanzania on Thursday this week granted approval to Kenya Airways to fly to Tanzania.

However, in a statement issued by Hamza Johari, the Director General of Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCCA), the approval has been nullified. This is just a day after it was issued.

“The Authority regrets to inform you that on a reciprocal basis, the Tanzanian Government has decided to nullify its approval for Kenya Airways (KQ) flights between Nairobi and Dar/ Kilimanjaro/ Zanzibar effective 1st August 2020 until further notice. This letter also rescinds all previous arrangements that permit KQ flights into United Republic of Tanzania,” said Johari.

On March 21st 2020, Tanzania accused Kenya of falsifying COVID-19 results of Tanzanian truck drivers who are tested at Kenya – Tanzania border of Namanga.

This, Dar es Salaam said was Kenya’s effort to “sabotage Tanzania’s tourism industry.

The Arusha Regional Commissioner said all the Tanzanian truck drivers who were confirmed to be positive for COVID-19 by Nairobi turned out negative after they were tested again by Tanzania.

“We are confident that this is a deliberate sabotage designed by Kenya against our Tourism Industry in Arusha and Tanzania at large,” he said.
