Police in Jinja has fired tear gas to disperse members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who were gathering around the party presidential candidate Patrick Amuriat Oboi.
Oboi like the rest of the candidates is launching his campaigns today, and he decided to hold his first in Soroti.
However, against Police advice, Oboi decided to hold a mass rally en-route to Soroti, making stop overs at various trading centres and townships.
Upon arrival in Jinja, the former Kumi Member of Parliament was swarmed by a sizeable number of supporters which prompted Police to respond with force.
The Police fired teargas to disperse the supporters.
During the course of the day, Amuriat is expected to make stop overs in Iganga, Namutumba, Mbale, Budaka and then he will undergo traditional rituals at Fika Salaama en-route to Soroti City where he is expected to unveil his bid.
He will also visit Mukura a place where over 50 civilians were allegedly massacred by soldiers of the then National Resistance Army (NRA) now known as Uganda People’s Defense (UPDF).
His entourage consists of the aspiring Kampala Woman Member of Parliament (MP) Stella Nyanzi, FDC National Chairman Wasswa Birigwa, Rukungiri Municipality Legislator Roland Kaginda among many others.
Retired Colonel Kizza Besigye the Party’s candidate for the last three times is expected to join the campaign trail at an unspecified date.
