The National Resistance Movement party electoral commission chairman, Dr. Tanga Odoi is scheduled to declare the primary elections result for the hotly contested Rushenyi constituency parliamentary flag bearer on Wednesday afternoon.
The Rushenyi result was cancelled two weeks ago after a petition from the team of State Minister of Labor, Mwesigwa Rukutana stated that Naome Kabasharira was irregularly declared the winner with 24,400 against the former’s 23,966 votes.
Retallying of the vote commenced on September 15, 2020, from the NRM election headquarters at Plot 13 Kyadondo. Tanga travelled to Rushenyi on a fact finding mission during the mayoral elections and met with the NRM members.
He reached Nyakahita cell where the result had not been included in the total results. The Nyakahita registrar took off and didn’t announce the result when fierce fighting broke out between Kabasharira and Rukutana supporters.
Rukutana team, in their petition, indicated that in Nyakahita he got 172 votes while Kasharira polled 140. Rukutana team has the declaration form of Nyakahita cell but Kabasharira team reportedly did not pick it in protest.
Rushenyi poll was characterized by violence leading to the arrest and charging of Rukutana with attempted murder, stealing a gun and other charges.
Other candidates in the same race were Bob Karabayi, who garnered 2,266 votes, Niwahereza Nicolous (1,202) and Nomani Kashereka 346 votes.
