Suspended MUASA Boss Kamunyu Petitions Court

Dr. Deus Kamunyu Muhwezi, the suspended chairperson of Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA)has petitioned High Court seeking reversal of his suspension which he claims is  unlawful.

Dr. Kamunyu, a lecturer at the Department of Forestry is suing the university through Vice- Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe whom he accuses among others of denying him access to his home located within the University premises.

He also alleges that the suspension has prevented him from attending Church services and entertainment places within the campus, which Nawangwe has no powers over.

Kamunyu asked court to order Prof.  Nawangwe and Makerere University to pay him general damages for portraying him as a criminal and an undisciplined Lecturer for merely expressing the views of other members of the academic staff that he leads.

Prof Nawangwe on 17th/January /2019, in exercise of his duties as Vice -chancellor he suspended Dr. Kamunyu from the University on grounds that despite repeated warnings, he continued engaging in acts that incited other academic staff to strike and disobey the University administration.

Following the suspension, lecturers at the university have up to now  refused to resume work until Dr. Kamunyu’s suspension is lifted

Court has given 15 days to Prof. Nawangwe and Makerere University to file their respective responses to the suit .
