Police have in custody two men suspected of using razorblades to steal ladies’ handbags.
Joseph Mukasa Kalyango commonly known as Begirt and Paul Serugo were arrested on Saturday by police following a tip-off from the public.
The officer in charge of operations at Kampala Central Police, Ivan Nduhura says Mukasa and his colleagues usually “waylay people on pavements of busy streets and outside shopping malls especially at the crowded Mini Price Building in the central Kampala to steal their valuables.”
“We have for long been receiving complaints about thieves who cut bags of those moving through the streets. Normally the victims discover that their bags have been cut after reaching their destinations. We therefore deployed detectives and other plain clothed officers who managed to apprehend and bring them to police,” said Nduhura.
ChimpReports understands this is not the first time Mukasa is being arrested by police.
He has on several times been convicted in court over the same offences but returns to the streets after serving his full sentences.
Mukasa, who is currently at CPS Kampala, said he was forced into this criminal activity when he lost his merchandise during scuffles with KCCA officers.
