A 40 year old disabled man suspected to be a poacher was on Monday evening shot dead in Mgahinga National Park in Kisoro district.
The deceased was identified as Jonat Habingoma, a resident of Nyakukyege village, Muramba Sub County in Kisoro district.
He was killed in the park by rangers who believed he was poaching, and his body was taken to Kisoro hospital mortuary.
On Tuesday morning however, residents from his village led by James Nzikatira, the Muramba LC3 Vice chairperson stormed Kisoro police station demanding for his body and proper explanation for his death.
The locals were angry that the rangers shot and killed an unarmed man who was disabled.
Nzikatira says the park rangers used excessive force and wants them to be prosecuted for murder.
Christopher Masaba, the Bwindi -Mgahinga chief warden however, said there was no proof yet that the suspected poacher was shot dead by rangers.
He says the park is protected both by the Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers and the Uganda People Defence Forces.
Charles Okoto the Kisoro District police commander says police have commenced investigations into the matter.
