Supreme Court Gears Up For Age Limit Appeals

The Supreme Court has appointed November 7th 2018 as the date for the pre-hearing conferencing for all appeals filed before this court challenging some parts of the Age limit ruling by the Court of Appeal that sat in Mbale this year

During this conferencing, the parties will discuss the consolidation of these appeals, issues to be determined by court, the mode of presentation of these appeals, schedules for filing submissions or rejoinders among others.

“All learned counsels are expected to robe in their professional attire at this conference,” directed the Supreme Court Registrar in a note to all counsels representing the appellants.

The advocates to whom this notice was addressed include the chambers of the Attorney General, Lukwago and Company Advocates, Rwakafuuzi and Company Advocates, Legal Aid project of Uganda Law Society and Male Mabirizi, a lawyer who is representing himself.

In July this year, Court of Appeal judges led by Deputy Chief justices Aphonsi Owiny Dollo delivered their ruling in which they all agreed to nullify the extension of MPs term of office, whereas 4 of 5 judges  upheld the lifting of the presidential age limit,

The petitioners who included MPs led by Former leader of opposition Hon Winnie Kiiza, Law society and Male Mabirizi decided to appeal this ruling before the Supreme Court.
