Police in Mbarara is investigating circumstances under which a dormitory caught fire at Mbarara Senior Secondary School located in Kijungu cell, in Kakoba division.
Regional police mouthpiece Samson Kasasira says the fire started at around midnight last night and razed the boy’s dormitory (Lumumba house) housing 76 students of S1 & S2.
Kasasira says police is treating this incident as arson by unknown people, who had moments earlier tried to set a girls’ dormitory ablaze, only for the fire to be put out before it could spread.
“As the teachers and students fought to stop the fire at the girls’ dorm, the arsonists took advantage to set the boys’ dorm alight,” said the police spokesman.
Kasasira says the police was called in to extinguish the fire flames but could do little to save the damaged dormitory property including mattresses, blankets, clothes, books and the roofing.
The school head teacher Mr. Geofrey Birungi told Chimpreports on phone that a lot of students’ property was destroyed and that there was no other option but sending the students home.
“We are officially sending S1, S2, S3, and S5 students back home for at least a week so that we can sort out what has been destroyed to reorganize the school.”
By filing of this story, several students had finished parking and were waiting for their parents to pick them up.
However the school authorities blocked journalists from accessing the burnt dormitory on the directive of the head teacher.
